A few weeks ago we attended the Odoo community conference in Spain and came back with one clear conclusion: artificial intelligence is no longer a promise, it's something happening right now. And within Odoo, the community itself is building it collaboratively.
We'd like to share what we saw, what it means, and why it should matter to you.
The community is already working on it
One of the most interesting aspects of the conference was seeing how different companies in the Odoo ecosystem have been collaborating for months — through the OCA (Odoo Community Association) — to develop real AI integrations in the ERP.
These are not controlled demos or closed projects. They are open developments, built collectively, already being tested with concrete use cases: invoice digitisation, accounting process automation, system configuration assistance, integrated chatbots...
And the best part is that it stays true to the open-source philosophy that has always been the driving force behind the Odoo community. This way of working is proving to be powerful across a wide range of scenarios, even when it comes to integrating artificial intelligence.
How does AI connect with Odoo?
So far, three ways of integrating AI into Odoo have been put forward, each with its own logic depending on the use case:
Bridge (external connector)
Odoo sends a request to an orchestration tool like n8n or Zapier, which manages the communication with the AI and returns the result. This was the first approach developed. It's fast and flexible, ideal for starting to automate processes without touching the core of the system. The downside is that it adds external dependencies and complexity to the stack.
MCP (standard protocol)
The AI communicates directly with Odoo using a standard protocol designed for artificial intelligence. It allows for more controlled executions. Access is also controlled, as there is a user running it with defined permissions and the logic is statically defined within Odoo itself. In other words, the AI cannot perform actions that don't make sense.
Native
The most advanced approach: Odoo acts directly as the orchestrator and the AI is the reasoning engine, with no external tools involved. Everything stays integrated within the system, with lower latency, greater security control and no third-party dependencies. Personally, we believe this is the most promising approach, as it allows for a high level of control over the tool. It is also probably the most suitable from a data security standpoint — even though it can take actions, it always does so as the user who initiated the process. Similar to MCP, this does not allow the AI to do just anything, as we specify exactly what it can do.
In all three cases, the AI does not have free access to do whatever it wants. The system defines exactly what it can do, what it can see and how it can act. In some integration demos, direct connections have been seen where the AI can hallucinate and perform incoherent actions within the ERP. That is why it is so important to do this correctly and in a fully integrated way. Defining these business rules is a fundamental part of the process in this type of project.
What this changes for businesses
Well-implemented AI in an ERP helps us eliminate friction in the tasks that consume the most time and deliver the least value.
Think about how many hours are lost every month on:
- Manual document review
- Entering data from files (invoices, orders, delivery notes...)
- Searching for information scattered across different places to answer a simple question
When those tasks are automated intelligently, the team can focus on what really matters: making decisions, serving clients, growing the business.
Is it ready for production?
Honestly: the technology is mature, but the implementation is where all the work lies.
The developments we saw are real and they work, but they need to be configured correctly for each company. It's not plug and play. It's about understanding which processes make sense to automate, what data we need for everything to work properly, and how to integrate it all securely.
That's where the work of an experienced partner comes in.
